Hadassah Magazine

Spectacular Israel, edited by Shai Ginott with text by Amotz Asa-El, is just that. Concentrating on the broad landscapes--golden brown deserts, urban architectural patterns and night lights, castles mid greenery, marvelous shots of flora, fauna and human beach-dwellers--the colors and angles delight and surprise.

Spectacular Israel starts out with two strikes against it because of its ridiculous size. The book is 12" x 16". It cannot fit into any bookcase and is too large for most coffee tables. To add insult to injury, some of the pictures, which are indeed "spectacular," are folded over. When opened, they measure a gigantic 12" x 21". The pictures are all in resplendent color showing Israel's landscape in unsurpassed radiance. They are the work of fourteen professional photographers who demonstrate unquestioned skill. The problem is that the book is too clumsy to handle so that the reader is distracted from enjoying the glorious scenes of inspiring Israel. Because the pictures are so great, it is worth trying to overcome this handicap.
